What is Class K Permit in Kenya?
This is a permit that allows foreigners to live as ordinary residents Kenya and make it their second home in a bid to foster diplomacy and bring benefits to Kenya. Class K permit is ideal for persons who wish to reside in Kenya without carrying out business and for the purposes of retiring as the name suggests.
To be eligible to apply for the Class K permit, one must meet the following requirements;
- Must be of the age of 35 or above. Rationale for the age limit is that this type of permit targets persons desirous of retiring in Kenya.
- Proof of a reliable source of income e.g. a pension, investments, bank account statement, Property income or other means generating a minimum of US$24,000 annually as the applicant must have the financial capability to support their lifestyle in Kenya without needing employment or engaging in income-generating activities in Kenya.
The application is tendered through the Kenya electronic Foreign National Service (eFNS) portal. Some of the required documents include;
- Duly filled form 25 available on the eFNS portal.
- Copy of current Passport of the applicant. Has to be valid for atleast the next six months.
- Passport photo of the applicant.
- Proof of income not less that USD 24,000 annually,
- Contact information of the applicant. Email addresses, Telephone number, Postal address, proposed residential address in Kenya,
- Physical address of the applicant.
- Cover letter to the Director of Immigration detailing their intentions and how they will benefit the country.
How much is Class K Permit in Kenya?
Effective 1st January, 2024, the charges applicable to Class K Permit were reviewed through Gazette Notice No. 15493 of 2023 from Kshs, 150,000.00 to Kshs. 250,000.00. The turnaround time for the processing of this application is two to six months, which timeline is depended on the propriety of the documents submitted and the facilitation offered.
